Home Based Business!Home Based Business as a Virtual Assistant

Your own Home Based Business
as a Virtual Assistant

Home based business idea:  If you have experience working in an office as an Administrative or other type of executive assistant, maybe you can put that experience to work starting your own home based business!

General Information*:
Home
based business ideas are sometimes as easy to find as looking at your own past experience and skills.  With them, you may have the opportunity to start your own home based business as a Virtual Assistant from your own home!

Job Description*:
This type of home based business would involve providing all types of administrative duties: appointment scheduling, research, problem solving, customer service, etc.

How to get Started*:
You may be able to find websites that list various types of home based businesses you can invest in, and there are other sites that list companies who may be looking for someone to deliver the type of service that your home based business will provide. Some of these websites are listed at our website. Before you start any home based business, educate yourself or hire someone else who can help you determine if there is a market for the type of home based business you want to start and whether or not you should be able to earn the amount of money that you expect to be able to earn from your home based business. Conventional wisdom isn't always reliable (remember the Pet Rock?), but you don't want to quit your job to start a business that has no hope of succeeding or showing a profit. There are many books and courses that may assist you, as well as professional consulting services you can hire to assist you. Additionally, the Small Business Administration may be able to help you and there may be other business development agencies in your own local or state government that can help. Sometimes just a couple phone calls is enough to help you understand how much market there may be for your new home based business and whether or not your business -- with plenty of hard work from you -- will be able to deliver the type of income you want.

Home Based Business Requirements*:
This home based business you will generally need a suitable PC, separate phone line, fax machine and printer, with internet access. You will need prior technical experience doing this type of work and it would probably be quite helpful to have good references to take with you when you go asking for companies to hire your home based business to work for them. You may need transportation to be able to call on prospective customers and later to pick up and deliver work. In some cases you may be able to build your own home based business doing this type of work from overflow work from competing services.  You may want to check with other companies in your area that provide this type of service to see if your new home based business can be a subcontractor for them. Virtually all businesses, including home based businesses, must be registered and may also require licensing.  Check with the local requirements in your city, county and state. Before you register your new home based business you will need a name for your business and an address.  You may wish to rent a mail box for your new business to help keep you organized by separating your personal mail from the mail for your new home based business. A private mail box will also allow you easy access to additional services such as shipping, and protect your family's privacy and security. Most businesses, including service-oriented home based businesses, benefit by having professional stationery, including very professional business cards. Brochures can be an important tool if you will be involved in direct sales for your new home based business.

Level of Difficulty*:
If you're experienced and skilled in this type of work, the work itself will probably not be very difficult for you. Doing this type of work as a home based business should not become substantially more difficult but it will depend on your individual skills as a business owner. When you have your own home based business you are generally responsible for conducting sales activity for your business, finding and getting the customers as well as keeping them happy. All businesses, including most home based businesses, require certain basic skills in order to stay in business. The owner is also generally responsible for deciding what products or services will sell successfully and the best price. Your home based business will also need someone to tend to other marketing demands, legal, tax and financial matters of the business. The good news?  Most of these skills can be learned.  What can't be learned can be hired out. Don't let a lack of confidence stop you from starting your own business. This particular type of business would moderate to low difficulty compared to other types of home based businesses.

Investment required*:
In addition to having a complete home office, transcription equipment, internet access plus software, the cost of starting this home based business would be modest compared to other types of home based businesses.  There would be virtually no inventory required, no major capital investment, and the home based business could be started on a shoe string.

Income potential of this home based business*:
This home based business, although it would probably start small, could be grown to virtually any size depending on the amount of work you were able to secure for your home based business. Your home based business could also expand to broker the service of other Virtual Assistants and/or recruiting Virtual Assistants.
