Home Based Business
Envelope Stuffing!
Home based business idea: Stuff envelopes at home!
General Information*:
While most mail is processed by heavy equipment that automatically stuffs envelopes, there is still a niche called "hand work" that you may be able to build your new home based business around.
Job Description*:
This type of home based business would involve processing the type of mail that can not be processed in machines. Personalized letters that must match personalized envelopes, mail that is odd sized or made of unusual materials that can not be processed in machines, and other types of work that machines can not do, such as special rubber stamping, stapling, gluing, etc. This type of home based business most would likely work for advertising agencies, printers and mailing services doing the type of mail processing that machines can't do.
How to get Started*: Before you start any home based business, educate yourself or hire someone else who can help you determine if there is a market for the type of home based business you want to start and whether or not you should be able to earn the amount of money that you expect to be able to earn from your home based business. Conventional wisdom isn't always reliable (remember the Pet Rock?), but you don't want to quit your job to start a business that has no hope of succeeding or showing a profit. There are many books and courses that may assist you, as well as professional consulting services you can hire to assist you. Additionally, the Small Business Administration may be able to help you and there may be other business development agencies in your own local or state government that can help. Sometimes just a couple phone calls is enough to help you understand how much market there may be for your new home based business and whether or not your business -- with plenty of hard work from you -- will be able to deliver the type of income you want.
Home Based Business Requirements*:
This type of home based business would require very little other than a table to work on, transportation to pick up and deliver work, and the labor to do the actual work. Virtually all businesses, including home based businesses, must be registered and may also require licensing. Check with the local requirements in your city, county and state. Before you register your new home based business you will need a name for your business and an address. You may wish to rent a mail box for your new business to help keep you organized by separating your personal mail from the mail for your new home based business. A private mail box will also allow you easy access to additional services such as shipping, and protect your family's privacy and security. Most businesses, including service-oriented home based businesses, benefit by having professional stationery, including very professional business cards. Brochures can be an important tool if you will be involved in direct sales for your new home based business.
Level of Difficulty*:
Other than the physical work involved in envelope stuffing, this would be an easy home based business to operate. All the home based business would really need was work and people to do the work. The owner is also generally responsible for deciding what products or services will sell successfully and the best price. Your home based business will also need someone to tend to other marketing demands, legal, tax and financial matters of the business. The good news? Most of these skills can be learned. What can't be learned can be hired out. Don't let a lack of confidence stop you from starting your own business. This particular type of business would moderate to low difficulty compared to other types of home based businesses.
Investment required*:
The cost of starting this home based business would be modest compared to other types of home based businesses. There would be virtually no inventory required, no major capital investment, and the home based business could be started on a shoe string.
Income potential of this home based business*: This home based business, although it would probably start small, could be grown to virtually any size depending on the amount of work you were able to secure for your home based business. Your home based business could also expand to hire many other employees for your company.
Special Comments*:
Beware of companies that require you to pay a fee to stuff envelopes. According to most consumer agencies, such offers are considered scams. In most cases, such offers will require you to pay for advertising and/or put up fliers advertising the same stuffing envelope scam that you fell for. When (and if) someone responds to the advertising (which you paid for), you will mail their information to the head envelope stuffing office, who will hopefully send you your $4-$7.00. That's what they call a "legitimate" job stuffing envelopes.
