Before you start any home based business, educate yourself or hire someone else who can help you determine if there is a market for the type of home based business you want to start and whether or not you should be able to earn the amount of money that you expect to be able to earn from your home based business. Conventional wisdom isn't always reliable (remember the Pet Rock?), but you don't want to quit your job to start a business that has no hope of succeeding. You may be able to think of other services that may also need data entry services. Offer to do the work on a contract basis. Home Based Business Requirements*:
To do data entry at home in your own home based business you will obviously need a suitable PC and the means to communicate with the company(s) that you work for. Often this involves uploading the data or entering it directly into a website. In most cases, you will need internet access. Most data entry jobs will also require previous experience or some type of track record. Excellent typing skills is an absolute must. Accuracy is paramount to the success of any home based data entry business. Frequently, an ability to decipher difficult handwriting and good spelling skills are also very helpful. You will need transportation to be able to call on prospective customers and later to pick up and deliver work. Since virtually all data entry work involves typing information from something in a hard copy format, your best customers will probably be in your local area. This will vary from job to job. If you are paid by the contract, or by the page, or word, etc., there will probably be no formal deadline, other than that which you may set for yourself. Sometimes data entry work is done on software that measures time and the number of keystrokes one makes. Data entry is not suitable for individuals who have wrist, arm or shoulder conditions or other injuries that would prevent them from sitting and typing in one basic position for long periods of time. All businesses, including most home based businesses, require certain basic skills in order to stay in business. The owner is generally responsible for deciding what products or services will sell successfully and the best price. Your home based business will also need someone to tend to other marketing demands, legal, tax and financial matters of the business. The good news?  Most of these skills can be learned.  What can't be learned can be hired out. Don't let a lack of confidence stop you from starting your own business.This particular type of business, a data entry business, would not be very difficult compared to other types of home based businesses.

In addition to having a computer and internet access plus software to do the data entry, the cost of starting this home based business would very modest compared to other types of home based businesses.  There would be virtually no inventory required, no major capital investment, and the home based business could be started on a shoe string.

Income potential of this home based business*:
This home based business, although it would probably start small, could be grown to virtually any size depending on the amount of work you were able to secure for your home based business. Some of the largest data entry projects are sent to India and other nations because it can be done very, very inexpensively.  This undoubtedly would affect the price you could charge for large contracts.

Special Comments*:
Beware of companies selling information that is specifically related to data entry jobs or "order processing" jobs. Often these types of offers involve unscrupulous businesses and you may regret investing in them! You are often required to advertise a specific product or service, and then after you receive the order you enter the order information into a computer, thus, the name "data entry job". If you will pay a service for information to help you find the data entry work for your new home based business, make sure you are dealing with a reputable company and that you understand exactly what you will receive for your investment.
